Frequently Asked Questions

How long is your waiting list?

My waiting list varies depending on various factors such as time of year, but typically you could expect a wait of 2-4 weeks. However, this can change, so I recommend reaching out through the Contact form or booking in for a Free 15 Minute Consultation for the most up-to-date information.

What can I do while I'm waiting for a session?

In the meantime, you can engage in self-care practices, mindfulness exercises, and education about OCD. I have a number of free educational resources available on my YouTube channel.

If you are in need of immediate care it is always recommended you speak with your health care provider.

Do you take insurance?

No, unfortunately I do not currently accept insurance. However, clients are welcome to book sessions on a self-pay basis.

Can you make an exception and see me earlier?

Unfortunately, I have to honour the waiting list system to be fair to everyone seeking my services. However, in cases of urgent need, I will do my best to provide some initial guidance and point you towards immediate resources.

If you are in need of immediate care it is always recommended you speak with your health care provider.

Do you offer online therapy sessions?

Yes, I offer online sessions via secure video call.

What is OCD?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health disorder characterised by unwanted, recurring thoughts (obsessions) and behaviors (compulsions) that the individual feels the urge to repeat over and over.

I have [insert specific subtype of OCD] how do I get rid of it?

All subtypes of OCD can be addressed using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and particularly Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), which is the current Gold Standard treatment for OCD. Sessions will be tailored using evidence-based tools to help you navigate this.

Do I have OCD if (insert unique & specific situation)?

OCD can manifest in many different ways, and everyone’s experience is uniquely their own. Rather than trying to figure it out on your own, consider how what you’re experiencing is affecting your life. If it’s causing you distress or making you feel stuck, setting up an appointment can be a beneficial movement towards discussing your situation to decide what your best next steps are.

Do you offer free sessions?

I do not offer free sessions. However, I try to make therapy accessible by offering a limited number of reduced rate sessions for individuals who are currently unemployed. To apply for this please head to the contact page and send a message to request to be put on the waitlist. Please note current wait times are high for this (6 months +).

Do I really love my partner or is it OCD?

It’s quite common to feel anxious or doubtful about relationships at times. However, if you find that these worries are consuming much of your day, causing deep distress, and impacting your ability to engage fully in life and love, this might point towards relationship obsessive-compulsive disorder (ROCD). It’s important to recognise when doubts take too much room in your thoughts and affect your daily activities. Through ERP therapy, we can work together to help you break out of the ROCD cycle. As you gain control over your OCD, you’ll find that you and your partner can focus more on enjoying your time together. Learning to manage your OCD can help you focus less on the challenges and more on creating cherished memories together. This shift helps foster the balance and equality that are essential for any healthy, happy relationship.

Are my memories false or real?

Anxiety and worry can distort how we view our memories, sometimes leading us to believe that our fears are real events. It’s important to concentrate on how these symptoms are affecting you and your daily life, rather than trying to pinpoint each memory’s accuracy.

It’s quite common to question your memories every now and then. However, if you find yourself deeply caught up in these doubts, constantly trying to piece things together, or trying to relieve the distress they cause, it could be a sign of False Memory OCD. ERP therapy can help you step out of this challenging cycle, enabling you to focus more on living in the moment and enjoying life.

How can I stop doing compulsions?

Using ERP therapy, we can tailor the process to your pace, allowing you to confront your fears gradually. This approach helps you build confidence as you learn to manage and eventually reduce your compulsive behaviours in a supportive, structured environment.

How can I ever be okay with discomfort?

It’s natural to want to avoid discomfort, but an important part of therapy, especially ERP, involves gently learning to tolerate these feelings. This process helps us understand that discomfort is temporary and manageable. As we realise our own strength and resilience, we begin to build confidence in our ability to handle life’s challenges, reducing the control that fear has over us.

What if I don't have OCD, can you still help me?

Whilst my main area of focus is helping individuals with OCD, I also work with a range of disorders, particularly anxiety disorders. This includes Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Health Anxiety, Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety, specific Phobias, and issues related to Low Self-Esteem. I use evidence-based treatment approaches to tailor support to your unique needs.

Will ERP be used in therapy?

Yes, it’s likely that if you book a therapy session I will suggest that we could use Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). It is a proven method for treating OCD.

Are you qualified to work with OCD?

Yes, I am. I’ve trained for multiple years in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which is highly effective for treating OCD. I have a strong background in using evidence-based approaches like Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) to treat OCD symptoms. Does OCD ever go away on its own?

OCD is a chronic condition, and while symptoms may wax and wane over time, they typically don’t disappear without treatment.

How do therapy sessions work?

Each session typically lasts 50 minutes. During this time, we’ll discuss your experiences; work on learning new skills and techniques, and set specific goals for you to work on between sessions.

I feel like my condition is more severe than most, will I ever recover?

Recovery may seem daunting, but it is definitely possible. Many people with OCD have found success with therapy and have learned to manage their symptoms effectively.

Do I need to be diagnosed with OCD to do ERP?

No. While ERP is often used for OCD, it can also be effective for other anxiety-related conditions. Similarly, exposure therapy, another effective approach, can be used for various issues. It’s important to look at how your difficulties are impacting you and choose the most appropriate strategies to help address them.

What if I've had therapy before and it didn't work?

Not all therapists have the same training or use the same treatment modalities so it’s likely that your experinece here may be different. Even if you’ve had therapy before, we can still work together. We will take your past experiences into account when developing a bespoke plan for your therapy.

Where will sessions take place?

All sessions are delivered through zoom meaning you can have therapy where you’re based with an internet connection.

Are online sessions as effective as face to face sessions?

A meta-analysis conducted in 2018 found that videoconferencing psychotherapy was as effective as traditional face-to-face therapy. You can find the details of this study here.

I want to get better but I'm scared therapy will make me worse

It’s normal to have fears about therapy. Our goal is to create a safe environment and help you navigate your fears at a pace that feels manageable to you.

Will facing my fears/ ERP make me worse?

While ERP involves facing fears, we do it in a structured, gradual way that ensures you’re not overwhelmed. Though it may be uncomfortable, ERP has proven long-term benefits.

Do you work with other conditions?

Yes, apart from OCD, I also provide therapy for a range of anxiety and related disorders, including but not limited to, Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Health Anxiety and Social Anxiety Disorder.
